Open Source

Branding a citywide art exhibition

The exhibition Open Source was designed to transform Mural Arts Philadelphia into an open source platform. The exhibit was lead by curator Pedro Alonzo, who’s work focuses on bringing art out of the white cube and into public space. Thirteen artists were invited to access the organization’s existing programs and established community outreach in order to develop projects that demanded public involvement and participation. In the tradition of open source technology, the artists built upon Mural Arts’ existing departmental infrastructure to address issues related to restorative justice, behavioral health, immigration, and arts education—issues that reflect long standing social and civic challenges faced by residents of Philadelphia.

The identity features a variable logo meant to represent walls, buildings, city blocks, and community connections. A singular color gives the exhibit strong brand recognition and allows the identity to pop against artwork and environments. Along with promotional materials and signage, a full exhibit space was designed to showcase each project, and acted as a hub for workshops, lectures, and a lounge during the month of October. Once the exhibit ended, a book was created to document and commemorate the astounding work that was created.
